Online betting and the law in India
The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 was passed by Parliament on 20–21 August 2025 and received Presidential assent on 22 August 2025. It:
- prohibits offering online money games, including betting, in India — also by operators based abroad;
- prohibits advertising and promotion of such games;
- prohibits banks and payment providers from processing related transactions;
- promotes e-sports and online social games, which are allowed.
Rules under the Act are issued by the Ministry of Electronics and IT. Several states (for example Telangana and Andhra Pradesh) also have their own bans. Laws change — check the current official sources before using any real-money service. This is general information, not legal advice.
